Butterfly Festival Marks Its 16th Year in Beşiktaş

The 16th Butterfly Festival, organized by Beşiktaş Municipality in cooperation with Rotary District 2420 Rotaract Representation, was held at Dilek Sabancı Park. Bringing together individuals with special needs, their families, and members of the wider community, the festival once again highlighted the importance of solidarity, inclusion, and equal participation in social life.

Organized under the slogan “Flying with Different Wings Under the Same Sky,” the festival featured a full day of activities, including dance performances, stage shows, arts and crafts workshops, games, and refreshments. Since its launch in 2008, the event has provided an opportunity for individuals with and without special needs to spend time together, fostering social interaction, mutual understanding, and community awareness.

Beşiktaş Deputy Mayor Rasim Şişman also attended the festival and met with participants and their families. During his visit to the event area, he spoke with attendees and joined them in commemorating the day through photographs and informal conversations.

Representatives of civil society organizations and volunteers participating in the festival emphasized the value of such initiatives in supporting social inclusion. Senem Dilek Duyan, a volunteer from the Foundation for the Education and Protection of Children with Intellectual Disabilities (ZİÇEV), noted that the festival made an important contribution to the social development of students by providing opportunities to build self-confidence, develop social skills, and engage in creative activities.

Bedriye Şener Yılmaz, Leader of the Disabled Scouts Group of Büyükçekmece Municipality, also underlined the positive impact of the festival on both children and their families. She noted that participants look forward to returning each year, prepare new activities, and are encouraged to share their experiences with others.

Drawing hundreds of participants from different districts of Istanbul, the 16th Butterfly Festival concluded with strong public interest and colorful scenes celebrating diversity, inclusion, and community spirit. The event once again demonstrated that differences enrich social life and that shared experiences help build a more inclusive society.
