Beşiktaş Municipality carried out an awareness campaign in Beşiktaş in order to draw attention to severe problems of our society about murders of women and the Istanbul Convention…
Let’s Build a Nonviolent Life with Solidarity
Based on the idea that the violence against women takes its source from the gender inequality between men and women, Beşiktaş Municipality placed a Digital Monument in Barbaros Square in order to draw attention to the Istanbul Convention aiming to establish full equality between men and women, which Turkey is a party. While the names of all women who were murder victims since 2008 are mentioned in the digital monument located in Barbaros Square, significant articles from the Istanbul Convention are also displayed.
In the meantime, Beşiktaş Municipality has placed Istanbul Convention announcements on buildings, billboards and posters all over the district to raise awareness about the issue. While walking on the road or passing by car, people can scan the QR code on the boards using their phone and reach to the Istanbul Convention online. In addition to this, the slogan "Istanbul Convention Keeps You Alive" will be reflected on the walls of Beşiktaş Municipal Building.
Rıza Akpolat, Mayor of Beşiktaş made a statement on the subject and said;
“We are against gender-based discrimination and all forms of violence against women. The Istanbul Convention, assurance of nonviolent life, should be fully implemented. We stand with all women in the struggle for equality.”
