Registration of Birth / Issuing a Birth Certificate
A birth must be registered by the father at the District Office of the Civil Registry Office within 30 days (failing to do so results in a fine). If the father is unable to do this, the registration procedure can be handled by someone who attended the birth, or by the mother.
The following documents are required for registration:
- Both parents’ residency and identity documents
- Marriage certificate
- Child's official birth certificate issued by the hospital
- Application form
- Payment for registration fee
- Naming a Child
A child's name must be chosen in a joint decision by the parents. If agreement can't be reached, Turkish law gives the father the right to decide.
In the case of marriage between a Turkish citizen and a foreigner, a child may be given two names (Turkish and another).
