The Street is Ours One Day a Month!

Being another signature event of the Beşiktaş Municipality, the “Ayda Bir Gün Sokak Bizim” (translates as “The Street is Ours One Day a Month”) event is going to be organized on Sunday, September 22, 2019 this month at the Ali Suavi Street in Beşiktaş.

Carried out in through cooperation between the Sokak Bizim Derneği (The Street is Ours Foundation), the Beşiktaş Municipality and the Karaoğlan Youth Center of the Beşiktaş Municipality, the Street is Ours One Day a Month events are aimed at reviving street culture, pedestrian-focused accessibility, a clean world and pollution-free transportation as well as livable street environments for children and all the people.

As part of these events, certain streets are pedestrianized during that whole day once a month and are only allowed to the use of pedestrians, bicyclists and disabled residents. They are also aimed at creating an awareness regarding the transportation and traffic problems, which are among the most important problems people face in today’s world, and their impacts on street culture and daily life. Starting from the question; “What is a livable street like?”, and trying to come up with solutions and answers, these events enable residents to discover different utilization practices of our streets.

This month’s “The Street is Ours One Day a Month” event will be carried out on the No-Car Day as part of the “September16-22 European Mobility Week”.  The Ali Suavi Sokak, where the event is to take place on Sunday, will be pedestrianized between 11.00-20.00 hours and will only be in service of pedestrians, bicyclists and disabled residents.

This month’s event will be performed in cooperation and with the support of with a wide variety of NGOs and foundations such as Beşiktaş Özgür Pedallar (Free Pedals), Beşiktaş Kooperatif Girişimi, Buğday Foundation, Çöpüne Sahip Çık Foundation, Çocuk Mekân, Yeşil Düşünce Foundation, Cep Sahne, Beşiktaş Search and Rescue Association, Pulsec, Okul Bostanları, the Chamber of Electrical Engineers Istanbul Branch, İmece Lab, 140 Journos, Association of Documentary Filmmakers In Turkey, Heavenly Practice.

The event will feature various activities such as art workshops, music recitals, street games, theatre performances, painting workshops for children, picnics with the participation of residents of any age throughout the day. Our citizens will experience a great day of street culture, free from all the cars. We invite everybody living in Beşiktaş and Istanbul to this meaningful and most enjoyable event!
