A New Practice for Proper Collection of Waste Masks & Gloves

Beşiktaş Municipality Implements a New Practice for Proper Collection of Waste Masks & Gloves

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Beşiktaş Municipality has been implementing some practices as part of the proper waste management efforts. Our municipal crews have placed "Collection Bins for Waste Masks and Gloves” at certain key points such as public institutions, markets and family health centres.

Within the scope of the pandemic, which keeps increasing both in the world and in our country, all the institutions carry out important actions taking various precautions. Experts point out that one of the most important criteria of protection from this outbreak is the use of masks and gloves. Fortunately, the attention paid by our citizens to these warnings has been increasing the use of masks and gloves in communal areas. However, this situation also brings along the problem of medical waste. Uncontrolled disposal of waste masks and gloves may increase the risk of citizens’ being infected. For this reason, our municipality started implementing a different practice in Beşiktaş. Through this practice of proper waste management, Collection Bins for Waste Masks and Gloves were placed at certain key points such as public institutions, markets and family health centres. The medical wastes thrown into the waste bins will be duly disposed after they are properly collected.

Emphasising that citizens should be sensitive about disposal of used masks and gloves to the medical waste bins due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Beşiktaş Mayor Mr. Rıza Akpolat shared this message on his social media account regarding the proper waste management practice implemented by the Beşiktaş Municipality: “We have placed waste bins at some key points in our district with a view to collect disposable mask and glove wastes separately at the source. In addition, the municipality that has implemented this practice in Istanbul the fastest is the Beşiktaş Municipality.”
