The Beşiktaş Municipality organized an event titled “Ayda Bir Gün Sokak Bizim” (translates as “The Street is Ours One Day a Month”) with the purpose of reviving street culture, creating a livable city for children, a clean world and pollution-free transportation. The event, which was held on Saturday, May 11, was attended by the Beşiktaş Mayor Mr. Rıza Akpolat, several NGOs, as well as many children who are the members of the Özgür Pedallar Association and the residents of Beşiktaş. The participants enjoyed cycling altogether and freely across Beşiktaş. The event was carried out with the support of the Consulate of the Netherlands and Mr. Bart Van Bolhuis who is the Consul General of the Netherlands in Istanbul, personally attended the cycling tour.
The children especially enjoyed cycling together with adults at this meaningful event, which also featured a lot of workshops and enjoyable contests for the children all through the day.
Mayor Mr. Akpolat shared the good news that the Municipality will establish a bicycle lane in Beşiktaş in the upcoming days. “Being an historic city, Beşiktaş has a very rugged landscape. Pedestrians and mothers face some problems in that regard. One of the reasons we have arranged today’s event is to experience and better understand these problems in our efforts to come up with solutions. We will make Beşiktaş a livable and accessible city for cyclists, for the handicapped citizens and pedestrians. We will establish bicycle lanes on the path that we have cycled today.’’
After the bicycle tour, Mayor Akpolat and Mr. Consul General visited the booths at the event venue and took photos with all the children. The event was welcome and paid a great deal of attention by the residents of Beşiktaş.
