Beşiktaş Municipality returned with 2 awards from Felis Awards (award ceremony in the advertising and marketing industry) with the project "Have you read the İstanbul Convention?" The campaign was carried out by Renee Advertising Agency and Beşiktaş Communication Office.
With the increase of violence against women, the Istanbul Convention, which is protecting women's rights has rapidly started to take place on our agenda. Based on the idea that the violence against women takes its source from the gender inequality between men and women, Beşiktaş Municipality placed a Digital Monument in Barbaros Square in order to draw attention to the Istanbul Convention aiming to establish full equality between men and women. The efforts to share convention clauses and inform people about the content of the contract spread rapidly, especially on social media.
Accordingly, Beşiktaş Municipality has placed Istanbul Convention announcements on buildings, billboards, and posters all over the district to raise awareness about the issue. While walking on the road or passing by car, people can scan the QR code on the boards using their phone and reach the Istanbul Convention online. In addition to this, the slogan "Istanbul Convention Keeps You Alive" was reflected on the walls of the Beşiktaş Municipal Building. As Beşiktaş is in the center of İstanbul, the campaign spread rapidly by the impact of social media first in İstanbul, then all over Turkey. It also was in the news in foreign media.
The project, which enables people to reach the İstanbul Convention within seconds with the QR code on the outdoor visuals, received very positive reactions on social media and received one Felis in the PR category - Public Relations Management at the Felis Awards, and the Outdoor Achievement award in the Social Responsibility and Sustainability category.
"We Will Continue to Stand by Women at Every Step"
Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat said, “We will continue to stand by women. The Istanbul Convention, which ensures a violence-free life for women and was prepared with the efforts of women from all over the world, was signed here in our city. Upon the discussions of this contract, we placed Istanbul Convention announcements on buildings, billboards, and posters all over the district to raise awareness about the issue against the unreal perception desired to be created regarding the convention. By doing so, not only in Beşiktaş but also in İstanbul and even throughout Turkey we created a significant awareness. It is a source of pride for us to be rewarded for this campaign. As it has been until today, in order to raise awareness about the full implementation of the Istanbul Convention instead of being discussed; we will continue to stand by women at every step”.
Beşiktaş Municipality's Corporate Affairs and Communication Director Çağdaş Yıldız stated, “Beşiktaş is one of the most populous districts in İstanbul during the day. Therefore, we wanted to draw attention to the issue with a direct message embracing everyone and to ensure that the convention could be accessed easily. According to the reflections in digital media, we have reached 10 million views in the last week. Our awareness-raising activities on this subject will continue."
Sercan Şenyüz, Creative Director of Renee Advertising Agency; " It is one of the dozens of projects we have done with pride. While our customer's perspective on disadvantaged groups in Beşiktaş has always been appreciated, it has enabled us to realize dozens of projects. While new awareness projects on women's rights are being held day by day, contrary to all these advances, the issue of the abolition of the İstanbul Convention, which we were surprised like everyone else, came to the forefront. Such developments bring a social responsibility mission to the provincial local governments whose districts receive thousands of visitors.
With this mission, we asked ourselves the question; why should one oppose the İstanbul Convention? The answer was simple. Nobody, especially those who opposed it, didn’t have the slightest idea about the convention. This time, we asked the question which made us have a flash of insight and implemented the project called "Have you read the İstanbul Convention?" And made the original convention accessible with a QR code. We are especially proud that the issue of abolition of the İstanbul Convention is not currently on the agenda and that our effort has been rewarded ”.
