9 May - Europe Day

On 9 May 1950, Robert Schuman, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France at the time, stated that it was essential to establish peaceful relations in Europe on a permanent basis and announced a proposal for a law with the aim of establishing a more systematic and organised Europe. After the 1985 Summit in Milan, it was decided that every 9th of May would be celebrated as "Europe Day". Since then, 9 May Europe Day is celebrated every year with various activities in both member states and candidate and potential candidate countries. Türkiye has started to celebrate Europe Day since 1999, when it was accepted as a candidate for the European Union.
