The World Environment Day Was Celebrated in Beşiktaş!

The Beşiktaş Municipality organized several events to celebrate the June 5, World Environment Day. As part of these this day, the recycling works and paintings made throughout the year by the secondary school students taking part in the ‘Nature: My Guide’ Program, which was carried out by the Beşiktaş Municipality in cooperation with the ÇEKÜL (Foundation for the Protection and Promotion of the Environment and Cultural Heritage), were exhibited at the Mustafa Kemal Cultural Center (MKM).

The Beşiktaş Acting Mayor Mr. Tahir Doğaç also attended the event at the MKM and gave a short speech. Emphasizing the fact that the environment in Istanbul is now clearer than before, Mr. Doğaç said: “One of the most important recent news was the washing up of a baby whale. 8 kilograms of plastic waste was taken out of his stomach. We are going to raise awareness about the nature in order to prevent such unfortunate occurrences. I wish you all a happy World Environment Day and I hope that the nature-oriented approach we have created in Beşiktaş together with non-governmental organizations will spread all over Istanbul and our country.”

After his opening speech, Acting Mayor Doğaç presented the participation certificates to the teachers who took part in the ‘Nature: My Guide’ Program. Seeing the exhibition together with the students, Mr. Doğaç thanked them for their awareness about the environment.

Another location where the celebrations were held was the Ortaköy Square. After the closing ceremony of the exhibition, Mr. Doğaç, the cleaning workers of the Beşiktaş Municipality and the students met at the Ortaköy Square. The students thanked the workers for cleaning the streets and gave them flowers. Mr. Doğaç also gave some advices to the students about the nature and environment and had photos taken with them. Mr. Doğaç also gifted them books about the environment.
