The Beşiktaş Municipality held a bicycle tour with the purpose of pointing out to bicycle transportation.
Hundreds of citizens biked in the “Cycling Beşiktaş” event organized by the Beşiktaş Municipality. The Beşiktaş Municipality held the tour in cooperation with the Istanbul University Cycling Club and with the support of PAGÇEV (Recycling Commercial Enterprise of the Turkish Plastics Industrialists for Research, Development and Education Foundation) and the company TREK. The tour started at the Dolmabahçe Clock Tower at 09.30 on Sunday morning on June 28, and finished at the Kuruçeşme Arena turning back from Aşiyan. The event, which took place on the coastline of about 13 km in total, aimed to encourage the use of cycling as a means of transportation.
The Mayor of the Beşiktaş Municipality, Atty. Murat Hazinedar, also joined the “Cycling Beşiktaş” event. He cycled together with the hundreds of riders attending the event.
Gathering at the Dolmabahçe Clock Tower, the riders cycled along the coastline up to Kuruçeşme in order to promote the use of bicycle.
The Beşiktaş Municipality supplied the high visibility jackets and water to the riders in the event. There were also bonus gifts. Bicycles were raffled off at the end of the event as a memory of the day. Stating that all the attendants gathered for the promotion of cycling as a means of transportation and sports, Yavuz Eroğlu, the Head of PAGÇEV, spoke as “Sports is very pleasurable but the joy of cycling is far different. As you know, our common problem is the air pollution in our cities. We have to decrease the carbon content released to the nature from cars, through fossil fuel use, which is one of the most important steps in solving the problem of air pollution. The most favorable solution is bicycle. The abundance of the cycling routes throughout a city is an indicator of being a civilized city. I invite everyone to cycling in favor of the environment and a more comfortable life for the people.” And the Mayor of the Beşiktaş Municipality, Atty. Murat Hazinedar, underlined that the ground conditions of Istanbul are not quite favorable for cycling and motorcycling continuing his speech as “Bicycle has been a part of my life since my very childhood times. We are trying to give a message aimed at not letting people forget the pleasure of cycling and encouraging them to use bicycle more actively by organizing such events despite the unavailable circumstances of Istanbul. We are enjoying a day of summer, coast, the Bosporus and bicycle through this event with hundreds of bicycle riders. However, we know that it is not possible to boost the interest in cycling just through a few events. They are not sufficient alone. We need to carry out large-scale projects in cooperation with the Metropolitan Municipality. The main drags of Istanbul where cycling can be rendered popular belong to the Metropolitan Municipality. Therefore, we deliver a message not only to the kids and adolescents, but also to the Metropolitan Municipality in that sense.”
