Continuing the annual tradition in Beşiktaş, the Beşiktaş Municipality organized a meaningful event in memory of our Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic on his 80th death anniversary.
Carrying a giant Turkish flag of 300 meters and also a huge love and missing deeply felt in their hearts, a great number of citizens across both Beşiktaş and the whole Istanbul marched from the Sakıp Sabancı High School to the Dolmabahçe Palace where Atatürk passed away.
Creating a human chain towards the Palace, the march started at 8 a.m. and was attended by the Beşiktaş Acting Mayor Mr. Tahir Doğaç, Vice Mayors, the Municipal Council Members, municipal staff, several NGO’s, representatives from some political parties, a lot of students and citizens.
When the clock hit 09.05 a.m., the hour of Atatürk’s death, the world stopped in Beşiktaş and everybody stood in homage.
The march ended with the commemoration ceremony held outside the Palace. After the ceremony, Mr. Doğaç placed a wreath inside the room where Atatürk died. Signing the visitor’s book in the Palace, Mr. Doğaç wrote down: “Dear Atatürk, as your sons and daughters who feel proud of your ideas, values and the right of living in freedom and honor thanks to you, we have never forgotten you. Nor shall we ever do so! You are alive. I commemorate you with great respect and gratitude. And I am also proud of serving as the Acting Mayor of Beşiktaş, where you resided for many years.”
