The Beşiktaş Municipality organized a meaningful event to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the signing of the Lausanne Peace Treaty, which was the turning point in the history of the modern Turkish Republic.
The event, through which we celebrated the achievements of our Republic thanks to the Lausanne Peace Treaty, also featured a commemoration ceremony in honor of İsmet İnönü and the Turkish delegation accompanying him that represented Turkey at the Lausanne Conference, and also a photograph exhibition showing the delegation members and the press news published about Lausanne Peace Treaty on international newspapers in those years.
The event, which took place at the İnönü Park in Beşiktaş, was largely attended by the public as well as Mr. Aykut Erdoğdu who is the Deputy Chairman of the CHP (Republican People’s Party), Acting Mayor of Beşiktaş Mr. Tahir Doğaç, Mr. Rıza Akpolat who is the Istanbul Provincial Acting Chairman of the CHP, Mr. Sebahattin Öztürk who is the Beşiktaş District Chairman of the CHP, Dr. Ali Şahin who is an academician at the Istanbul University, and Prof. Dr. Cüneyt Akalın from the Istanbul Arel University, who all gave speeches about the importance of the day.
The Beşiktaş Acting Mayor Mr. Tahir Doğaç said; "The Lausanne Peace Treaty is the diplomatic continuation of the huge military success we achieved at the Turkish War of Independence. The short time gap between the signing of the Lausanne Peace Treaty and the proclamation of the Turkish Republic was not coincidental at all. One of the most important propulsive forces supporting Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades through their proclamation of the Turkish Republic on October 29, 1923 was the accomplishment they gained on July 24, 1923. For this reason, the Lausanne Peace Treaty is regarded as the ‘Title Deed of the Turkish Republic’, which is an utterance I personally like very much. As long as the notion of Republic is on target within the internal politics of Turkey, the secular constitutional state will also be on target. If the Lausanne Peace Treaty is on target, then the Turkish National State will also be on target. We, as public-spirited defenders of the ‘Kuvayı Milliye’ (The Public National Forces during the Turkish War of Independence) and the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, will never allow such ill-minded targets. We all have debt of gratitude to those heroes who gifted us this beautiful country and lands through the Lausanne Peace Treaty. The signature of our great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stands under this title deed!’’.
After the speeches were given, the attendees visited the Lausanne photograph exhibition area, which attracted a lot of attention from the public as well. The program ended with the performance of our Municipality’s Folk Dance Team.
