The 4th Fotoistanbul Takes Place on the Streets of Beşiktaş!

 

The 4th Beşiktaş International Photography Festival "Fotoistanbul" started on September 30 in Beşiktaş and will end on October 22.

The Fotoistanbul Beşiktaş International Photography Festival, which brings together many photography artists from Turkey and also from all over the world every year, has opened its doors for the 4th time on September 30, 2017. During the Festival, various events except exhibitions will also be held including panels, roundtable discussions, conversations with masters, portfolio evaluations and book autograph sessions.

 

The opening party for the Festival took place on Saturday, September 30, at the Ortaköy Orphanage with the attendance of the Beşiktaş Mayor Atty. Murat Hazinedar. Mr. Mayor gave the opening speech and saw the photography exhibition there.

The Fotoistanbul Beşiktaş International Photography Festival moves photography from indoor walls, strict rules, certain categories to the streets and to a level through which every individual can encounter at any corner in Beşiktaş, randomly or on purpose. Treating all the disciplines and styles of photography, the Festival brings together the classic with the modern, the masters with the youth. In the previous three years, it hosted and exhibited the works of 238 domestic and international artists including the leading names of the photography world such as William Klein, Josef Koudelka, Anders Petersen, Stanley Greene, Atta Kim, Ara Güler, Nick Brandt, Antoine D’agata, Sandro Miller, Ruud van Empel, Andre Kertesz. A total of 160 exhibitions, 273 supporting events and hundreds of portfolio evaluations were presented to the photography lovers until this year.

Fotoistanbul is exhibited on the streets, corners, squares and various outside locations in Beşiktaş and this year’s venues are the Beşiktaş Square, the streets of Beşiktaş, the Ortaköy Orphanage, various cultural centers as well as some photography galleries such as the Art Galerim Bebek, Mixer, Fotoğraf Evi, İstanbul Photography Gallery, O’Art, Gama and Fototrek Photography Center.

Fotoistanbul 2017 is hosting some prominent international artists including Omar Victor Diop, Michael Kenna who is famous for his black-and-white nature photographs, Youngho Kang who is known as the “Dancing Photographer”, and also Alejandro Chaskielberg, Alex Timmermans, Eddo Hartman, Serge Najjar, Gyula Soproyni. The Festival also features some Turkish artists. Namely; Ahmet Elhan, Ali Alışır, Çerkes Karadağ, Saygun Dura. There will also be a conversation session about the great photographer Sabit Kalfagil, who has recently passed away. His works are also shown at the Festival.

In addition, the works of the winner of the “Robert Capa International Grand Prize”, which is deemed as one of the most prestigious awards of the photography world and given in honor of Robert Capa who is the one of the greatest photography artists ever, will be exhibited at the Festival just like in the previous years.

The Art Director of the Fotoistanbul 2017 is Attila Durak, the Festival Executive Director is Rıza Erdeğirmenci, the Communication Coordinator is Ersin İleri, the Project Coordinator is Ebru Uluğkay , and the Project Manager is Noyan Sungur. And the curators are as follows; Coşar Kulaksız, Hüseyin Yılmaz, Katharina Mouratidi, Jae Hyun Seok, Christophe Laloi, István Virágvölgyi. 

 

The Fotoistanbul Beşiktaş International Photography Festival has achieved an international awareness since the very first year it was held in 2014.This year’s Guest of Honor is the Netherlands and 5 Dutch photographers; Alex Timmermans, Annabel Oosteweeghel, Marieke Van Der Velden, Eddo Hartmann and Peter Edel are taking part in the Festival with their exhibitions.

This year’s Instagram contest of the Festival will be held in cooperation with the Lomography Türkiye and the mobile photography group Hart Collective. The first evaluation out of the thousands of photographs sent by contestants from all over the world will be made by the Hart Collective Jury and the finalists will be determined as a result of the public voting to be performed on Facebook. The first 4 winners will be awarded by Lomography Türkiye with various gifts. Besides, the works of the first 50 photographers voted at the contest will be exhibited at the Festival.
